Military time (MT) is, like it sounds, the standard way of telling time in most militaries. It is utilized by militaries to eliminate the possibility of confusion when transferring scheduling details.

When applied effectively, it eliminates the want to specify no matter if an event or action is usually to take location inside the AM or PM. As you might think about, accidentally switching the “A” to a “P” or vice versa on a written document or accidentally mistaking the “A” for any “P” in a conversation could be devastating in a military setting. Therefore, this technique was created.

Military time can also be known as 24 hour time or possibly a 24 hour clock, because it is a method that goes from 0-24, as opposed to 0-12. It's also distinctive from normal time (ST) in that, when written, it will not possess a colon between the hours plus the minutes.

It's also normally four digits (i.e. 0450 and 1123), as opposed to its counterpart, which is often just three digits (i.e. four:50 AM and 11:23AM).

To convert from military to typical time is very straightforward. If the MT is significantly less than 1200, you just format it like ST (XX:XX) and add “AM” afterwards. When the MT is greater than 1200 (i.e. 1456), you simply format it like XX:XX, subtract 1200 and add “PM” afterwards.

To convert from typical to military time, you don't need to do much if the ST is earlier than 12:00PM (noon). All you may have to complete in those instances, is remove the colon and get rid of the “AM” designator. If the ST is later than 12:00PM (i.e. 7:45PM), you just add 12 for the quantity inside the hours spot and format it like MT. Hence, 7:45PM becomes 1945.
